What is an Altered Book?
The altered book is an art form in which artists create new works of art using existing books. The book is your blank canvas, you complete its transformation with your ideas and images.
What will I learn in the Workshop?
The basis for creating an Altered Book. How to chose a book, the tools and materials, developing themes, and general processes. The Basic Techniques will include: collage, stitching, cutting shadowboxes, adding drawers, hanging embellishments, golding pages, adding inserts, making pockets.
Materials Included in the workshop fee:
Two Sided Tape
Matte Medium & Glue
Grommet or Eyelet Tool
Paint and Brushes
Spray Paint & Match Boxes
An assortment of rubber stamps and ink pads
Collage Resources
Hole Punch
Tapestry needle
Embroidery Thread
1” Plastic Putty Knife
Card board (used as a cutting matt) |
Please bring the following:
One or two books that you would like to alter
Craft knife (xacto knife) with plenty of #11 blades
Any collage materials, photos or embellishments for your Altered Book
Scissors |
Optional Materials you may choose to bring:
Heat Gun or Blow Dryer
Rubber stamps, ink pads
Small Embroidery Scissors
Adornments or Three Dimensional Embellishments
Ribbon or embroidery thread
Small Cutting Mat
General Art supplies, paint, etc |

Old buttons, bits of lace, rhinestones, sewing notions, sheet music, postcards – irresistible treasures for the vintage inspired crafter! We’ll start with a blank chipboard book and bling it out with flea market finds and artsy finishes! Your workshop kit will have plenty of materials for you to work with, but feel free to bring your own photos, images, and other special bits and bobs. This Junque Journal will be perfect to hold your thoughts, recipes, family photos, or use it to hold your favorite artsy/crafty supplies on the go!
